Dr. Geirsson’s Focus

Dr. Geirsson’s focus and passion is providing minimally invasive techniques to treat heart disease. He has mastered approaches to the mitral valve, avoiding the need to split the breast bone. Through the evolution of his minimally invasive techniques, he can now offer an even less invasive approach. Utilizing the da Vinci Xi robotic system offers patients cutting-edge technology to repair mitral valves. This is a safe and effective way to repair the mitral valve, while offering superior visualization and precision for the surgeon.

Robotic Surgery

The surgery consists of five small incisions 1/4 inch to 1 inch in size in the right chest wall. The arms of the robot pass through these small ports operating with great dexterity and precision. Using this technique also allows us to repair the tricuspid valve, atrial septal defect closure, MAZE procedure, and mitral valve replacement.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

If Robotic Surgery is not an option we can also offer, mini thoracotomy which is also a minimally-invasive surgery to repair the mitral valve. The incision is slightly larger than the ones used during the Robotic Mitral procedure (3-4 inches), and is made between the ribs, which prevents the traditional surgery approach of splitting the breast bone and ribs.
