Our Surgical Outcomes

Outcomes of mitral valve repair should be measured by operative survival, durability, and long-term survival. Yale is a high-volume mitral valve center, with its surgeons performing over 250 mitral valve operations annually. Dr. Geirsson, a skilled mitral valve surgeon, leads the program carrying out over 100 mitral valve operations per year. Most of these operations are done with the use of the DaVinci robot. The robotic mitral valve repair program is widely recognized for excellent outcomes with 0% 30-day mortality and 100% repair rates.

THEY SAY

“I had the great fortune to host and proctor Dr. Geirsson and his cardiac surgery team in the Advanced Robotics Training Course at WVU. They demonstrated a remarkable enthusiasm & motivation to learn and operated at a very high level. I have trained many surgeons and teams over the years, I was very impressed by Dr. Geirsson and his team’s technical ability, aptitude, & collaboration using the robot. Following completion of the training program it was clear to me Dr. Geirsson and his team would be highly successful. They were a pleasure to work with and I endorse them without reservation.”

“Since 2004 I have worked with teams from all over the world to launch and develop successful robotic cardiothoracic surgery programs. The cardiac team, led by Dr. Arnar Geirsson, exhibited the extraordinary dedication, uncommon commitment and exceptional talent that has led to the fastest launch of a robotic heart program in my experience. Masterful elegance combined with earnest compassion describes Dr. Geirsson and his team. He and his team have earned our highest recommendation for robotic heart surgery for patients interested in less invasive procedures. The robotic cardiac team embodies the organization’s mission of commitment to innovation and excellence in patient care and service to our communities.”
